Union Issues, Frugal Owners Discussed at Carmel Conference
May 17, 2002
Doing business for owners who expect lower prices in a soft economic climate was a major concern among contractors attending a recent conference in Carmel.
Other issues such as successfully organizing non-union contractors, creative approaches to increasing the unionized industry’s market share in the growing public-works sector and diversifying to respond to a changing marketplace were also addressed.
Keynote speaker Kim Walesh, director and co-founder of Collaborative Economics, emphasized the need to work together to ensure that the Silicon Valley region is positioned to take full advantage of the “next wave of expansion that will inevitably occur.”
The Construction Employers’ Association and the Santa Clara and San Mateo counties Building Trades sponsored the conference.
The conference was jointly chaired by Charles Toeniskoetter, president of Toeniskoetter & Breeding, Inc., San Jose; Neil Struthers, chief executive officer of the Santa Clara & San Benito Counties Building and Construction Trades Council; and Bill Nack, business manager/executive officer of the Building and Construction Trades Council of San Mateo County.
